THE TAMARILLO
THE TOMATO ON STEROIDS!
The tamarillo, also known as the tree tomato, is a vibrant, egg-shaped small exotic fruit that has three varieties: red, gold and amber.
It’s simply delicious with a simultaneously sweet-savoury taste.
A relative to the tomato, it looks like a tomato on steroids and is a must-try for adventurous foodies.
You can eat tamarillo raw; simply slice in half and scoop out the centre, avoiding the skin and bitter flesh closest to the skin. Inside you’ll notice dark black seeds which are edible, like tomato seeds.
Here’s an interesting fact for you – tamarillos are native to Central and South America and are a relative of the potato, tomato, aubergine and pepper.
You can pair tamarillo with mature cheese and red meats (or maybe something sweeter like making a juice with sugar.)
Tamarillo is a staple when it comes to cooking. We love this tamarillo chutney recipe, or if you have a sweet tooth, how about a tamarillo crumble.
Tamarillos also have heaps of health benefits. They are rich in vitamins, minerals and antioxidants. They are packed with vitamins A, C, E, so as well as looking good they are good for you too!
