Description - We usually receive Brazilian or Spanish papayas (Brazil is the main exporter of papayas to the UK), so I really enjoyed trying these papayas from Colombia!

I was struck by the wonderful colour of the skin: whereas Brazilian papayas ripen from green to yellow, these papayas had an eye-catching golden-orange colour.

Inside, there was deep-orange flesh and only a small seed cavity. One of the most annoying things about papayas is when they have lots of seeds, as this means you have less flesh to enjoy, so I was pleased that this variety didn’t have many!

The flesh itself was soft and fibreless, with an almost melt-in-the-mouth creaminess. As well as being slightly juicier than other varieties, these Colombian papayas surprised me with their lack of muskiness.

Although papayas have a tropical and sweet flavour, you can also usually taste musky undertones, which puts some people off eating them.

However, this variety has none of the musky notes, and instead had a mouthwatering honeyed-sweetness!

I loved the flavour so much that I’d have to rate these as the best papayas I’ve had this year!

Storage - To maintain freshness, store your papayas in refrigeration.

Rating - 8.75/10. The flavour is amazing and I would definitely recommend these to people who are looking for sweet papayas. However, I think they could do with a stronger kick of sweetness – I’ll still go for a super-sweet mango when I want to satisfy my sugar cravings!
