Grown -Goa, India

Description - You’d be forgiven if, at first glance, you mistook mankurad mangoes for alphonso mangoes.

Yet, despite the physical resemblance, the differences between mankurad and alphonso mangoes are a constant source of debate in India – whereas the ‘king of mangoes’ is often considered the superior choice, Goans proudly regard their native mankurad mangoes to be the best mangoes money can buy!

Unusually for South Asian mangoes, mankurad mangoes are fibrous

Although I love the buttery smooth texture of fibreless mangoes, I really enjoyed the texture of the mankurad mango too: whereas fibrous mangoes usually have firmer flesh, I found that this variety remained wonderfully soft, with a delightful creaminess and chalkiness reminiscent of Caribbean Julie mangoes!

These mangoes also differ in that they don’t have the strong fragrant aroma that’s characteristic of other South Asian variety. Yet, their flesh boasts a brilliant flavour, with exceptional fruity, tropical notes.

Storage -Keep refrigerated once ripe.

Rating - 8.8/10. They will definitely be one of my go-to Indian mangoes this season. They are one of my tasting highlights of the year, although I’m expecting to eat fruits which are even better!
