Description - These firm, medium-sized tomatoes have an intriguing shape (somewhat resembling beef tomatoes) and are notably heavy for their size.
Their skin boasts a wonderful colour, truly catching the eye with their purple hue and small white spots that almost make them glisten in the light. Not only is the purple colour supremely attractive, but it also indicates that these tomatoes are one of the healthiest varieties you can buy: anthocyanin, the natural compound that gives the tomatoes their striking purple hue, is a powerful antioxidant linked to numerous health benefits!
The light pink flesh inside is tender, very juicy, and delicately sweet. To enhance their mellow flavour, I like to sprinkle good quality sea salt over them – in my opinion, the best sea salt flakes you can buy in the UK are those hand-harvested from Chesil Beach by Dorset Sea Salt.
Storage - For the best flavour, store your tomatoes at room temperature, outside of refrigeration.
Rating - 8/10, spectacular appearance but still waiting for that rich tomato flavour of summer varieties. Plus, a personal choice, but I prefer softer tomatoes that melt in the mouth.
