LIVE TO 100: SECRETS OF THE BLUE ZONES WHY PURPLE SWEET POTATOES

ARE A SUPERFOOD

If you saw the Netflix series Live to 100: Secrets of the Blue Zones, you will know that purple sweet potatoes are so renowned for their health benefits that some people believe that eating them will increase your life expectancy!

The Netflix show explored the possible reasons why the ‘Blue Zone’ in Okinawa, Japan has more centenarians (people who reach their 100th birthday) than anywhere else in the world.

As purple sweet potatoes make up a significant part of Okinawans’ traditional diet – reportedly 70% of the diet of Okinawans who live to 100 consists of these eye-catching potatoes! – it was suggested that they are one of the factors contributing to this extraordinary rate of longevity.

Whilst we cannot confirm that eating purple sweet potatoes will make you live to 100, it’s true that they deserve the title ‘superfood’.

Their health-giving qualities largely stem from the fact that they contain anthocyanin. This natural compound not only gives the potatoes their striking purple hue, but is also a powerful antioxidant linked to numerous health benefits.

They boast a higher content of dietary fibre and are lower in both carbohydrates and calories than standard supermarket-bought potatoes too, so they’re definitely the best choice if you’re looking for a nutritious potato!

Besides their nutritional value, purple sweet potatoes are favoured for the colour and flavour they bring to mealtimes.

Their rich, sweet-sour flavour (with subtle hints of wine!) and dazzling appearance turn even a simple jacket potato into a satisfying meal!

In fact, one of the best eating experiences I’ve had recently was simply putting a purple sweet potato in the microwave for 5 minutes.

Adding some salted butter (you can’t go wrong with Netherend Farm’s top-quality organic salted butter), and sprinkling on a dash of salt and pepper – the creamy, fluffy potato was divine!
